Genes and Disease
With the entire human genome slated for sequencing, almost every day brings a new scientific discovery of a genetic variant that is associated with a specific disease. In the wake of these discoveries, the popular press has published numerous articles on how advances in genetic science will radically transform the practice of medicine. Rarely, if ever, do these and other articles on genetics cover the public health implications of gene discovery. The impact of genetic discoveries on public health practice is likely to be felt across all disease areas. Public health professionals will increasingly use genetic information to more effectively target behavioral and environmental factors that lead to many diseases.
