Fall Semester
o **8100 The Discipline of Nursing (3 cr; SP-Graduate nursing major or #; A/F or S/N or Audit). Knowledge structures used in nursing; theories, models, and conceptual frameworks. Articulation and evaluation of personal conceptual framework for advanced nursing practice (if necessary).
o **8140 Moral and Ethical Positions in Nursing (3 cr; SP-Graduate nursing major or #; A/F or S/N or Audit). Synthesis of ethical positions, from nursing perspective, on health-related issues at individual, group, population, and policy levels. Normative ethics, theoretical basis for positions taken, and contextual implications for subsequent action (if necessary).
o **8170 Research in Nursing (3 cr; QP-Inferential statistic course; SP-Graduate descriptive and inferential statistic course within past 2 yr.; A/F or S/N or Audit). Research process and methods appropriate for research problems relevant to nursing. Critique of research studies and proposal development are primary methods for developing knowledge and skills necessary to understand the research process (if necessary).

Year One

Spring Semester
o *8110 Developing Nursing Knowledge (2 cr; SP-Nursing Ph.D. student or #; S/N or Audit). Philosophical perspectives and research methodologies for developing nursing knowledge.
o 8112 Theoretical Foundations of the Discipline (3 cr; QP-8012 or equiv, knowledge of philosophy of science; SP-8100 or equiv, knowledge of philosophy of science; A/F or S/N or Audit). Paradigms in nursing and related methods of inquiry, knowledge structures, and projection of needs for further knowledge development and testing.
o 8150 Moral and Ethical Development in Nursing Science (3 cr; QP-8011 or equiv; SP-Graduate nursing major, 8140 or #; A/F or S/N or Audit). Interactions among research and theory in moral judgment and behavior, applied ethics, and nursing.

Year Two

Fall Semester
o 8173 Principles and Methods of Implementing Research (3 cr; QP-8114 or equiv, 2 graduate statistic courses; SP-8114 or other 8xxx grad research methods course, 2 grad stat courses; A/F or S/N or Audit). Integrates scientific, statistical, and practical aspects of research. Interrelationships among design, sample selections, subject access, human subjects requirements, instrument selection and evaluation, data management, analyses plans, grant writing, and research career issues. Field experiences required.
o 8175 Advanced Nursing Research (3 cr; QP-8014 or equiv, advanced inferential and nonparametric statistic, comp science course; SP-8170 or equiv, advanced inferential and nonparametric stat, comp sci course; A/F or S/N or Audit). Interrelationships among types of knowledge and phenomenon, methods of scientific inquiry, generation of research questions, accepted conventions of stating and studying relationships; questions examined by reviewing writings of selected authors.
o A nursing cognate course (2 cr)

Year Two

Spring Semester
o 8113 Theory Development in Nursing (3 cr; QP-8110; SP-8100 or equiv, 8112 or #; S/N or Audit). Strategies for theory development; synthesis of theoretical formulations in nursing using selected inductive and deductive theory development strategies.
o *8177 Advanced Nursing Research Practicum (1-4 cr; SP-Nursing Ph.D. student, #; A/F or S/N or Audit). Students collaborate as a team in research experience providing opportunities to synthesize knowledge in an area of study and to design and/or implement research.
o Supportive program course (3cr)
o Written preliminary exams during Year 2 or Fall Year 3. The oral preliminary exam is taken after the written preliminary exam.

Most students will take Nurs 8812, 8113, 8173, 8175 and 8150 as preparation for writing the written preliminary examinations in nursing theory, research, and ethics.
