The UC Berkeley School of Public Health's mission is to develop, apply and
share knowledge from multiple disciplines to promote and protect the health of
the human population, with sensitivity to multicultural perspectives and
informed by human rights. The school carries out this mission with programs of
teaching, research, and service, which are grounded in the basic sciences and
integrated through a focus on communities. Besides the five basic academic
divisions of public health, specialty areas of concern in public health cut
across disciplinary boundaries and draw from the content and skills of the core
disciplines in public health. Thus, in this manner interdisciplinary approaches
to public health problems are encouraged and facilitated. Recognizing the
increasing interest in interdisciplinary work, students are encouraged to avail
themselves of the many opportunities that exist on the Berkeley campus and at
UCSF. Collaborations on the Berkeley campus are present in many departments and
schools including Molecular and Cell Biology, Public Policy, Anthropology,
Business, Social Welfare, and Journalism. These resources on campus are very
rich and diverse and underscore the value of having Berkeley's School of Public
Health located at one of the world's great universities.
