P8380 Urban Environmental
Planning
This course will cover the major environmental problems in urban
areas and propose new opportunities for bringing about solutions, from
global to local initiatives. Although New York City will serve as a
special focus, the differences in the environmental priorities of cities
in the developing and developed world will be addressed from both a
public health and equity perspective. The unifying them for each topic
will be the current state of affairs and the possible impact on the
future of urban planning and public health practice.
Course requirements include
attendance and active participation in classroom discussions (35%);
preparing 2-4 page topic summary, outline and bibliography for a final
term paper (20%); and final semester paper (45%).

Epidemiology of Genetic of Aging
An introduction to research in aging from both the epidemiolgic and
human genetics perspectives. Methodologic and substantive issues related
to aging health profiles are discussed. Topics include study
design, modeling of aging, active life expectancy, geriatric conditions,
statistical genetics methods, gene mapping of aging phenotypes, human
model system, and application to health policy. Required readings,
three papers, and one problem set.
Prerequisite: P8438 Epidemiology II.

HP8510 Methods of Teaching in Health Care will
be taught on 4 Fridays, January 23,February 9, March 2 and March 23 from
9:00-4:30 pm. This course presents students with a review of
learning theories and their application to teaching adult learners with
different backgrounds and levels of preparation. Development of specific
modules for work in health care or academic settings will be the focus
of the course. Students will have an opportunity for practice and
evaluation of teaching strategies: lecture, discussion, problem-based
learning (.e.g., case study method), experiential exercises (e.g.,
role-plays), audio-visual aids, critical thinking.
