Every course offered for academic credit in the School of Hygiene and Public Health, whether on-site or off-site, is evaluated by students. The mechanics of course evaluations are handled by the Office of the Associate Dean for Graduate Education and Research. Policy and oversight of course evaluations are the responsibility of the Student Assembly, which designates a student in charge of the course evaluation process each year.
There are two types of evaluations. First, there are standardized evaluations, meant to be useful to students who are interested in a specific course and to faculty advisors whose responsibility it is to suggest to their students certain courses in the School. Questions covering various aspects of the course content, appropriateness of the workload in the course and the instructor's ability to teach the course are included in the standardized evaluation. Results of this evaluation are provided to individual faculty members and are made available on the School's home page after the end of each term. Hard copies are also placed in the Lilienfeld and Welch Medical Libraries. In addition, copies may be obtained from the Office of the Associate Dean for Graduate Education and Research (410-614-5367), room E-1148, Wolfe Street Building).
The second type offers an opportunity for students to provide direct feedback to instructors in a confidential manner. This evaluation is open-ended, non-structured written feedback directly to course instructors which is handled in a confidential manner. Written comments are completed by students, brought to the Associate Dean's office and held there until after grades have been submitted, and then returned directly to course instructors. In this way, students are able to give more complete feedback to the course instructor to improve the course.
