The School of Public Health at Saint Louis University was founded in 1991 as
a central step in the University's commitment to the provision of
population-based education that prepares students for careers in health
services, health promotion, and disease prevention. The School has many unique
features which distinguish its programs. It is the only school of public health
in Missouri and the only school of public health in a United States Catholic
University. Perhaps its most significant feature was its early recognition of
the need to establish strong ties between the School and professionals in
practice within communities, cities, counties, the state, and the nation. These
ties have been manifested in many ways, including the development of a format to
allow practicing professionals to return to graduate study without leaving their
existing positions, a cooperative agreement with the State of Missouri which has
resulted in the exchange of personnel and numerous research and training
projects, and an advisory board spanning all areas of public health practice.
